The exhibition space Machinery of Me shows contemporary art in an old boiler room, where the smell of oil and the sound of falling droplets once gave the tranquil space a mystical atmosphere. The installation 'Starstruck' (2020) that Lester developed for this space is a visual and auditory experience that stimulates the imagination in many ways, but is essentially about mortality. Water breaks open a layer of oil through which light makes its way out, only to be swallowed up in a black hole again. Like a continuous creation and decay, the work points us to the beginning and the inevitable end. But imagine our lives as short flashes in an eternal universe, united in destiny, like stars on the firmament. In that perspective the work also evokes emotion and can offer consolation in a period characterized by uncertainty and loss. Photography by Jeroen Musch and Eva Broekema
